May 19th, 2019

The B55, our Paris 13 hotel, is a true jewel of luxury in the heart of the Left Bank of Paris. The urban landscape is constantly changing in Paris, and the François Mitterrand library district is the perfect example. If many works make the daily life of the place, its transformation is more and more perceptible over the days. Overview of this new neighborhood in continious change.

What should you visit in Paris 13th?

The BNF, or the National Library of France François Mitterrand

How to talk about this neighborhood without mentioning its iconic library? It is the embodiment of the 13th arrondissement. Its four square towers erected on the banks of the Seine are located on both sides of a large forest populated with green trees.

The National Library of France, born at the initiative of François Mitterrand, represents, according to its architect, four open books. Formerly a little austere, the area around the library is now a nice place to stroll with your friends or family on Sunday.

The Grands Moulins de Paris

Another example that perfectly illustrates the transformation and optimization of places. This building, inspired by classical architecture, was built from 1917 to 1921 by Georges Wybo, and bought in 1919 by an industrialist to become a flour mill (space where the flours are prepared).

After decades of service, the Grands Moulins became obsolete and were forced to close doors in 1996. Thanks to the work of the architect Rudy Ricciotti, the Grands Moulins are now the home of a campus of the Paris-Diderot University, including its central library. Successful reconversion!

Quite cleavant, this structure is recognizable by its green neon all along the Quai d’Austerlitz. Open to the public in 2012, it hosts many professional and public events. It is a place of culture, leisure and relaxation, rich of varied programming throughout the year. As a real “city in the city”, its 15,000 square meters also hosting several bars and clubs, which is why the City is a place more and more popular with party goers.

This site of creation and artistic production named “Frigos” takes its name from the old function of places. They were originally a cold storage rail (a giant fridge in a way).

The place has since lived several lives … After its abandonment, it is the squatters who first invested the place. Gradually, the Frigos were populated by artists, unknown or emeritus, like Ben or Jerome Mesnager. Today, since 2003, studios and studios have replaced the floors of the place, today a major area of contemporary art.

The Salvation Army Refuge

Considered essential by lovers of modern architecture, this colorful building is actually one of the first large buildings built by Le Corbusier. It is also a shelter for people in difficulty, consistent with the primary mission of the Salvation Army. Beyond the “welcoming” part, the place provides a real work of accompaniment to organize a reinsertion adapted to the people in need.
